One of the best parts of MiniBury is meeting community members that selflessly devote their time and energy to the betterment of our community. Recently, we virtually met Caitlin Myers (thank you 21st century technology), the woman helping organize 4th annual Adam Myers Memorial Fundraiser. Her husband Adam Myers was a devoted husband, father and friend to many. He was a passionate volunteer for the Middlebury Fire Department and a valuable employee at Two Brothers Tavern. On July 20, 2011, Adam died tragically in a car crash that thankfully spared the lives of his wife and two young sons. But his spirit lives on, and it is in this spirit that our community comes together each year to help raise money for the men and women of the Middlebury Fire Department who risk their lives everyday so that we may be safe.
Caitlin kindly humored us with answers to questions that ever parent hopes to know before venturing out of the house with small children in tow. So here’s what we learned about the fundraiser (and her adorable kids).
what are you doing on july 25?
We’ll be joining our fantastic community at the fourth annual Adam Myers Memorial Fundraiser for the Middlebury Fire Department.
Do we dare bring the kids to this event?
This is an event for families! From 10 to 12 at the Middlebury Rec Park, the fire department will put on a “mini-muster,” which is a child-sized version of firefighter sports and competition. (Think of a sort of field-days for firefighters.) The Middlebury Fire Department will bring fire trucks, snacks, and a bunch of fun games including the ever-popular foam pit.
At six in the evening, Two Brothers Tavern will host a raffle in their downstairs lounge. Our generous local business community has donated a bunch of really great prizes. You can buy tickets for $2 each at Two Brothers, at the mini-muster, at the raffle, or from me. Finn and Cullen also are eager to sell some!
Sounds fun, but how much does it cost?
There’s no charge for admission. But please consider buying some raffle tickets, purchasing one of the super-cute kids’ MFD t-shirts at the mini-muster, or making a small donation. The Middlebury Fire Department is a volunteer department whose members dedicate an enormous amount of time—at all hours of the day and night—to keeping our community safe.
where can we learn more?
Check out the Addison Independent or Two Brothers Tavern’s Facebook page. Stop one of your friendly local firefighters. Or ask me all about it while I’m digging in my bag for raffle tickets!
what do you hope kids gain from this fundraiser? how about parents?
Adam was a big believer in the power of individuals to create positive, supportive communities. I cannot imagine a better tribute to his memory than coming together with our children to put that belief into action.
Thanks Caitlin! We can’t wait for Saturday, hope to see you all there!
